eBay's Q2 2016 Sees $19.8 Billion in Marketplace Sales, Passes 1 Billion Live Listings

eBay reported its Q2 2016 earnings today. Marketplaces delivered $19.8 billion in gross merchandise volume (GMV), up by 5%, and $1.8 billion of revenue, up by 3%. eBay higlighted the fact that eBay.com and other marketplaces have over 1 billion live listings for the first time. In Q1 there was 900 million active listings, so the products' catalog has grown by 11% in just three months. Given how the big the catalog was to start with, that's a very impressive growth rate.

Fastest Growing eBay.com Sellers June 2016 Report

Like many of the previous eBay reports, fastest growing sellers in June were a diverse group of sellers. eBay.com customers left 22,877,010 feedback ratings this month. In comparison, Amazon customers left only 4,651,740 ratings. Thus people who buy on eBay are more likely to comment about their buying experience, even though a lot of Amazon sellers are now sending follow-up emails to their customers asking to leave feedback.

Walmart Marketplace Grows Double in Size in Three Months

Even though the Walmart Marketplace launched in 2009 it has been slow to grow. When we reported on it in May it had only grown to 500 sellers. Walmart has been working on perfecting their processes and improving the software side of it which implied the limited growth of the marketplace. Nonetheless since then it has been growing at a steady pace and just crossed 1,000 sellers.

Rakuten is Closing its UK and Spain Marketplaces

"In the UK and Spain, the cost of growth relative to the size of the businesses has led to plans to close these operations" said Rakuten this week. Rakuten acquired Play.com in 2011 for $40 million, and turned it into Rakuten.co.uk in months following. Despite global presence in Japan and the US, Rakuten.co.uk struggled to match Amazon UK and eBay UK.

eBay Shipping Supplies is a unique seller. It's not really a separate seller - this is eBay selling eBay branded packaging for sellers. Recently eBay is trying to compete with Amazon by increasing their brand awareness, and one of the ways is by offering sellers credits to buy packaging supplies. Since almost all Amazon sales come in a box with Prime marketing, eBay wants a similar effect.

China's Ecommerce Growth In 2016 Q1

China's ecommerce market is already the largest in the world, yet it continues to grow. Despite Alibaba and JD.com facing challenges expanding delivery networks to reach over 1 billion people living in rural areas, both have posted better than average growth numbers in Q1. Alibaba Group reported 24% year-over-year growth of gross merchandise volume (GMV) at $115 billion. JD.com reported it's sales grew by 55% to $20.1 billion.

Pharmapacks, largest health and beauty seller on Amazon, on plans to do $300 million next year

We have featured Pharmapacks in many of our fastest growing amazon sellers reports. They are projecting to do between $140 and 160 million in revenue this year, and if all goes well do as much as $300 million in 2017. Keep in mind that they did $32 million in 2014, just two years ago. Only a few sellers ever have achieved such growth.

Fastest growing seller is The Stamp Professor by stampprof. Based in Naples, Florida they offer a selection of postal stamps from 1941 all the way to current times. Today eBay Inc. reported 2016 first quarter results. eBay Inc. reported $20.5 billion in gross merchandise volume, up by 5%. $19.6 billion was generated by marketplaces like eBay USA, eBay UK, etc. Marketplaces revenue was up by 3% from 2015 Q1.
